Alumni Class Notes

Class of 1938
Benjamin Harris received his B.E. in 1938 and his Ph.D. in 1941 from Hopkins. He retired from the US Army Chemical Center in 1982 where he worked as a Technical Director. He was in the US Army from 41-45(WWII). From 1946-1953 he was an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at JHU. From 1952 – 1982 he held various positions at the Chemical Warfare Center Edgewood Arsenal and Pentagon.

Class of 1948
After graduating Edwin Lehnert worked at Edgewood Arsenal for two years. After that he joined the family business (155 years old). They are involved in the sales and service of transportation Equipment. Edwin currently lives in Havre De Grace, Maryland.

Class of 1950
Vincent Maggio received his B.E. in 1950. He completed his graduate work at Rice and University of Houston. Vincent retired from Exxon Shell Oil Company in 1987 where he worked as a Senior Staff Engineer. He designed, built and operated 23 petro-chemical plants during his 43 years in the field.

Class of 1952
Carl Heath also received his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1956. He has retired as the president of Corporate Transformations, International. In 1994, he established the Carl E. Heath, Jr. Fellowship Fund to support women graduate students in engineering at the Whiting School. Dr. Heath enjoys meeting the Heath Fellows each year and discussing their research and future plans. He stays in touch with many of the Heath Fellows after they leave the Whiting School
Class of 1956
John Edward Steers received his B.E.S from our department in 1956. He also graduated from the University of Maryland in 1966. He was employed from 1956-1962 at Bethlehem Steel Corporation-Applied Research, Iron and Steel making. From 1974-present he is the President of Carroll Surgical Associates. Dr. Steers and his wife Charlotte currently live in Finksburg Maryland.
Class of 1987
Peter Caffrey received his BS from JHU and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland. He is working as a Research Chemist at the Naval Research Lab in Maryland.

Class of 1991
Melchior Meilchen works as an Associate Engineer with Celanese AG in Houston, Texas.

Class of 1995
Lisa Smith also received her MS and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia. She currently works as an Environmental Engineer at the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine.
Class of 1996
Paul Hinderliter, Ph.D. is currently working at DuPont as a Research Scientist.
Class of 1997
Joseph Ismert currently works at Sioux Chief Manufacturing. He married Erica Thorp (Class of '97) and currently lives in Overland Park, KS.

Class of 2000
Joan Patterson is currently enrolled in the M.S. program at North Carolina State University.
Sammy Datwani received his B.S. in 1994 and his Ph.D. in 2000 from the department. He currently lives in Dublin, CA working as a Research Engineering at Eksigent Technologies, LLC.
Attri Datta lives in Landsdale, PA and works as a Biochemical Engineer at Merck & Co.
James McCadden joined the Marine Corps shortly after graduation. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in August of 2000. After completing Basic Office Course and Communication and Information Systems Officer Course he reported to 8th Communication Battalion in Camp Lejeune, NC in October of 2001. He recently returned from Kuwait where he supported Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Class of 2003
After receiving her B.S.E. from JHU, Linda Jan enrolled in the Ph.D program at Stanford University.
Dave Sebba is attending Duke University and is enrolled in the Ph.D. program in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Martin Kolewe started working at Amgen RI shortly after graduation. He is involved in the startup of a new $1 billion manufacturing facility set to go on line in 2004.
After receiving her B.S., Rashea McCall accepted a job with the Naval Surface Warfare Center working as a Chemical Engineer.
Brian Daniels was admitted into our department’s Ph.D. program in January of 2004. He is currently working on a research project with Professor Denis Wirtz.
Ben Gray just accepted a position (04) at the Baltimore VA Hospital.
After receiving his Ph.D. in 2003 Owen McCarty accepted a position in the Department of Pharmacology at Oxford University. His wife Jennifer received her Ph.D. in 2003 from the department of Materials Science and Engineering at JHU.

Monica Burdick is working at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Institutes of Medicine as a Post-Doc.
